I took a quick look Migovie, and in the 1881 Canadian Census, there appear to be 24 " John McTavish" between born between 1820 and 1860 who were living in Ontario. The picture was from 1870, and he had to be at least 30 years old. When I try to narrow it down and go from 1820 to 1840 I get only 10 matches. Now this is assuming that John is still alive and still in Ontario in 1881!
Try a search in www.familysearch.com in the 1881 Canadian Census data.

but then again, I had another idea, just do the search for John McTavish born between 1820-1840 AND who were born in Scotland. There are only 3 of them.
. John MC TAVISH - 1881 Canadian Census / Ontario
    Gender: Male Birth: <1824> Scotland

    2. John MCTAVISH - 1881 Canadian Census / Ontario
    Gender: Male Birth: <1826> Scotland

    3. John MCTAVISH - 1881 Canadian Census / Ontario
    Gender: Male Birth: <1829> Scotland

im unsure which family member actually penned the datails on the back of this pic...I feel the date of arrival in n.z of this pic as 1910 is probably pretty close....but do have a little doubt as to the stated date it was taken...1870...
however the person who recieved this pic was my gt grandad alexr james mactavish who in fact died 1912....so im guessing perhaps even this uncle "john" or "james" may have even recently passed away and thus the sending of his pic, ???( the name is a little unclear from the faded pen )...it appears evident that this uncle john or james was a hard working man as he is dressed as what i would guess to be a lumberjack, or fisherman, or farmer etc....outdoor clothes ....

I know this hasn't to do with the posts re John mactavish of an earlier generation.
Anyway, I had a great uncle John Mactavish who emigrated to Canada about 1907. At the out break of WW1 he joined the Canadian forces and was sent to France. He died on the Somme battlefield in 1916. John was married to Elizabeth Ann Murdoch. According to some files I have, Elizabeth remarried. There may have been children born in Canada.
Does anyone out there know anything about these people?

I have access to some Canadian Census data, let me see if I can find out something for you. The internet has allowed us to meeting distant cousins and connect and share history! I love it when I "get found"
E-mail me with some pertinant data, date of birth especially!

Looking for descendants of John mactavish born Hamilton, Scotland 1879 died Somme Battlefield Sept 1916. John married Elizabeth Ann Murdoch 1905 Hamilton,Scotland and emigrated to Canada sometime after 1908.Suspect there were children to the couple born in Canada. After John died with the Canadian Infantry Elizabeth Ann Married again
